In the United States Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps, a colonel is a senior field military officer above the rank of lieutenant colonel and below the rank of brigadier general. It is equivalent to the rank of captain in other uniformed services, such as the Navy, Coast Guard, Public Health Service Corps, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Corps. The Colonel's insignia is a silver eagle, a stylized representation of the eagle that dominates the Great Seal of the United States (the coat of arms of the United States).
