p365 concealed carry

P365 Concealed Carry - Well, that's a bold statement! Only time will tell if it is true and the gun is reliable. I have owned many handguns and have for various purposes, including concealment. As anyone who's been around long enough knows it's a balancing act of ability vs stealth.

Ideal. you want a gun that is as thin and small as possible that holds the most accurate and reliable rounds. I knew about the Sig 365 release and to be honest I really didn't think much of it. I have two main guns that I rotate. Glock Gen 3 G19 with a few tweaks and a S&W 442 J frame. Both have been reliable and I train with them often.

So, until I got to wear one at an NRA event in Dallas, I was like "Oh, this is cool!" It is hard to believe that they have 10 rounds in a mag in a grip that is as thin as a singlestack mag. In fact, the rifle is about the size of a single stack 380.  I contacted Sig and they had it shipped to me and I have to admit, I still see "I can't believe how small this is!"

I am happy to report that the rifle has cycled everything I have put through including 135g+p Hornady Critical Duty ammo. It was very accurate and I stuck clay pigeons on the berm at 25 yards. It shoots very well and catches very well.

It wears very comfortably in Clinger Holsters Ora Print Wonder. I hadn't heard of this company but did a Google search for P365 holsters and they came up. I liked what I saw and based on my previous experience with holsters I chose Ora Print Wonder. This is a well made holster that secures the gun well but is also easy to draw and very comfortable. The cliché "I forgot I was wearing it" comes to mind. And the rig is light enough that I had shorts and no harness.

So far I am very impressed with the Sig P365. I will update this review as I get more rounds through it. In nearly 15 years of concealed carry, I have over 5,000 days checking many guns for EDC. I brought seven different models, from full size to subcompact, six brands and five calibers. As a professional and personal standard, I passed the state police qualification with about half of the gun, from concealment practice I don't always have. In addition to these rifles, I have had the opportunity to test many other worthy candidates as a rifle instructor and writer. After all the hours of doing and using, I have come to the conclusion that, for me, the best choice for EDC is the Sig Sauer P365. And I know I'm not alone! At the 2019 SHOT Show, more than one gun holster vendor acknowledged that the P365 remains in business.

So what is all the hype about this gun? Should you switch from what you carry to a small Sig? After all, no gun is perfect. Here, from a personal but doable perspective, are what I see as the pros and cons of having the Sig Sauer P365 as a concealed carry gun.

This rifle uses every type of steel-and-brass factory ammo I've tried - at least a dozen. I have run several thousand rounds through, and it has not suffered a single malfunction related to the rotation of ammunition.

Sig outdid themselves in developing the metal body magazine that this pistol provides. Instead of a stack-and-a-half configuration like the Glock 43 works, the P365 packs 10 instead of six rounds in the mag with no change in size. Two mags, one with a flat compact and one with a soft angled bottom for pinky support (both polymer bottoms) are included with the purchase. The pinky support mag is so well designed, it's the only one in memory that doesn't hurt when forcefully smacked into the well.

If the 10+1 rounds in the Ruger LC9/Glock 43 size pack aren't enough, Sig has also rolled out 12 and 15 round magazines for the P365. These two mags are again compatible with the slightly larger, yet compact P365 XL, introduced in the wake of the P35's runaway success.

Tritium "night sight" is one of the features I carry in the gun every day. Sig Sauer's interpretation of the three-point tritium system is well done. Rounded corners and a low profile create a friendly appearance. During the day, the front display seems larger and more intuitive to aim and direct. At night, the points behind and in front are illuminated with the same size and intensity. Tritium is located inside the steel sights. Front and back they are dovetailed for total adjustment. While the P365 may seem like it costs more than many subcompacts, this feature represents the best value of $100 – and puts the P365 back in the ballpark of the most popular mid-range carry guns.

Subcompacts, even the striker-fired one that the P365 is, are often equipped with triggers that require a long or heavy pull. The magazine disconnect function is also common. This "safety" feature has its place in a world where there are people who insist on carrying guns but refuse to train or follow safety rules. This safety feature, which provides the lowest common denominator in the concealed carry community, is a source of frustration for accomplished shooters and makes the gun less easy to shoot with precision and/or distance when the shots really count. The P365's trigger is not a match trigger - there is some initial travel - but the entire travel is satin smooth. Break occurs at 5.3 kilograms. The reset point is less than half the travel distance for the first shot and is crisp and tactile without feeling clunky. If you take the time qualifier, the trigger does not interfere with the creation of the time.

If you have brought one of the many subcompacts made with a shape or pull trigger that makes you look like a shooter worse than you are, especially when the distance starts to stretch above 10 meters, the P365 can feel like it driving a luxury performance car. . At one inch wide, it is 0.3 inches thinner than a Glock 26 with the same mag capacity. But it is thick enough to get a positive grip.

In addition to reliability, I insist on magazines that release without assistance, whether full, empty, or partially loaded. Running that reloads speed much faster than the support hand does not have to help the "old" mag! At least with the two 10-rounders that come with the gun, these mags fill the bill in the drop-free department.

As with any pistol, getting used to the mag release takes a little effort. It is placed in an artificially carved position that makes it functional, yet snag-resistant. I have found that pressing the exact one hour location on my thumb works every time. The grip is shaped so that the flesh of my medium-sized hand does not interfere with the magazine drop, including the smallest, flat mag. In this department, the P365 is a winner over some of its larger competitors.

I rely on a good holster and finger discipline for safety, and shun manual safety is time consuming. P365 I don't have it. However, there are people, especially those new to concealed carry, who enjoy the comfort of a manual safety. I cannot underestimate that opinion. With P365, the choice is yours.

There is a lot going on with the Sig Sauer P365. But no gun is perfect. In this shooter's opinion, here are some of the inconveniences I encountered, although minor-

The ridges that interface between the slide and the slide lock are very narrow, perhaps because there is a lot of space in this gun taken by ammunition and magazines, compared to the rest of the size. When fired with a firm two-thumb forward grip, the slide does not lock back when the mag runs dry. This is definitely a user input problem as I can fire the gun with one hand or two hand grip with the left hand as primary and it constantly moves to lock back. Please note, not all operators have this happen with the P365, with the same grip as me. There is something to be said for hand conformation, which is unique to each shooter.

Any subcompact pistol chambered in 9mm Luger or better is definitely "snappy" in the recoil department. When I move the right thumb of the gun to fire, the lockback happens. However, I chose the better control offered by the "correct" grip and only deal with running dry as a cleaning malfunction if I happen to lose count of the rounds fired. The rifle does not have a tangible loaded chamber indicator, but a small notch at the top of the chamber that must be checked visually. It's faster and wiser, from a self-defense shooting perspective, just a deal
