Public Defender Handgun - The first thing one notices about the Taurus Public Defender is how light and small this powerful rifle really is. Don't let that small footprint fool you. A public defender has incredible stopping power for your personal protection.

Suited to concealed carry, the Public Defender is often referred to as the Taurus Judge's little brother. Similar to the Judge, this five shot pistol is designed to fire either the .410 round or the .45 Colt round. However, the Public Defender only punches with a 2-inch barrel and polymer frame. Ultra-lightweight is always a plus when you're looking for the ultimate concealed carry weapon, and the Public Defender tips the scale at just 23 ounces on my scale. However, there's more to a PD gun than just polymer magic that makes it a great carry.

The public defender is well designed to be easy on the film. I wasn't sure how well a gun of this size would fit in the hand, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well the Defender fit in my hand. The rubberized grip with finger holes has very functional ribs to help my grip, and room for a very comfortable two-handed grip.

The Taurus Judge Could Be An Intruder's Worst Nightmare

No wonder it kept flipping in my hand while shooting. Lots of power is generated, but a good grip and cleverly designed trigger guard prevent slipping during recoil.

Even with a small footprint, Taurus Public Defender has gone to great lengths to ensure that it is accurate. After all, my defense depends on being able to hit the shots I shoot. A fixed rear sight is combined with a bright red, high-visibility front sight. The sights, and the rest of the gun for that matter, are well designed to not snag on holsters or clothing. That said, I always recommend practicing by hand to make sure there are no surprises when caught on unexpected fabric.

Follow-up shots are facilitated by the natural recoil path and reacquire the target with hi-vis. I have no trouble at range staying on target at 30 yards. If you use Public Defender for frost shots as well, you'll be glad to know that you don't have to be on pest control to take care of business. Home defense shooting is mostly at close range, but when the threat is a snake, I'll stay as far away from the target as possible.

Speaking of home defense, one of my favorite things about the Taurus Public Defender is the overall safety of this gun. Most revolvers are easy to cock when empty, but the Taurus has taken safety engagement to a higher level with a safety lock. A key on the bottom of the barrel is used for safety. A random twist of a button or slider while tied in a waistband or carried around in a bag or purse will not harm people.

Bull Public Defender will not fire until the key is used to remove the security. A fantastic safety feature, especially for beginner shooters who may be new to concealed carry. Another safety feature, a heavy-duty double-action trigger with a 12-pound pull, prevents accidental discharge, especially if you're jumping into the bag with other loose items.

For concealed carry, the ultra-compact Taurus Public Defender is ideal. Impressive stopping power with a smart and safe design, you won't be able to escape this great gun by your side.
